Perth Hills Day Trips Perfect for Adventurous Dogs

If you’re looking for dog friendly day trips from Perth Hills, you’re in the right spot. I’ve spent countless weekends exploring these trails, cafés and parks with my pup, and I’m excited to share the best adventures waiting for you and your furry friend.

The Perth Hills is genuinely one of the most rewarding places to explore with your dog. The cooler climate, shaded jarrah forests and variety of trails make it perfect for pups who struggle with Perth’s summer heat. Plus, there’s something special about watching your dog’s tail wag as they sniff their way through wildflower-lined paths or cool off near a waterfall. Whether you’re after a gentle morning stroll, an energetic hike, or a lazy afternoon at a dog-friendly winery, the Hills has you covered. Let me walk you through everything you need to know to plan your perfect day out.

Safety First: What You Need Before Heading to the Hills

Before we get into the fun stuff, let’s talk safety. The Perth Hills is beautiful, but there are a few things every dog owner needs to know.

1080 baiting is active in some areas, particularly within national parks. Always check signage before entering any trail, and avoid John Forrest National Park’s interior sections where baiting occurs. The Railway Reserves Heritage Trail has a 4-kilometre section through the park where dogs aren’t permitted for this reason.

Water is scarce on most trails. Unlike metro parks, many Hills walks don’t have drinking fountains. I always pack at least two litres of water and a collapsible bowl. Trust me, your pup will thank you halfway through a summer walk.

WA road laws require pets to be properly restrained while driving. Pop your dog in a crate or use a harness that clips to the seatbelt. It’s safer for everyone and keeps you on the right side of the law.

Tick prevention matters more than you might think. While paralysis ticks aren’t as common in WA as they are on the east coast, cases are increasing in jarrah forest areas. Keep your flea and tick treatments current, and give your dog a quick check after each walk.

Pack a basic first-aid kit too. Include bandages, antiseptic, tweezers for removing grass seeds, and your vet’s phone number. Better to have it and not need it.

The Best Dog Friendly Walks in the Perth Hills

Right, let’s get to the good stuff. Here are my favourite trails that welcome dogs.

Road trip with dogs tips: railway reserves heritage trail bridge

Railway Reserves Heritage Trail (Darlington to Glen Forrest)

This 6-kilometre section of the larger 41-kilometre loop is perfect for a morning adventure. The trail follows the old railway line through bushland, offering shade and relatively flat terrain. Your dog needs to stay on-lead, but there’s plenty to sniff along the way.

Park at Darlington or Glen Forrest and enjoy the walk through towering trees. Just remember to skip the section through John Forrest National Park if you’re doing the full loop.

Dog friendly day trips from Perth Hills: Noble Falls

Noble Falls Walk Trail

At 3.6 kilometres, this Gidgegannup trail is one of my favourites for winter and spring visits when the waterfall is flowing. The picnic area allows off-leash time, which is brilliant for letting your pup burn off energy before the walk.

After your hike, cross the road to the Noble Falls Tavern for a well-earned drink. They’re genuinely dog-friendly and often have treats behind the bar.

Things to do with dogs Perth Hills: Whistlepipe gully

Whistlepipe Gully Trail

This 3.5-kilometre trail near Kalamunda offers everything: a seasonal stream, wildflowers in spring, and stunning city views from the top. The gradient is moderate, so it’s manageable for most fitness levels.

Keep your dog leashed throughout. The trail can get busy on weekends, and you’ll share the path with families and mountain bikers.

Where to take my dog in Perth Hills: Jorgensen park

Jorgensen Park Loop

Perfect for puppy socialisation, this 2.7-kilometre loop in Kalamunda winds through the former golf course. The open spaces connect to off-leash oval sections, making it ideal for young dogs learning recall.

I’ve met some lovely local dog owners here on Sunday mornings. It’s become a bit of a community hub for Perth Hills dog lovers.

Lesmurdie Falls

WA’s highest waterfall makes for a spectacular backdrop to your walk. The short 2.4-kilometre loop requires dogs on-lead and can get quite busy. Visit early morning during summer to avoid both crowds and heat.

The lookout platform offers incredible views, though you’ll need to keep a firm grip on the lead as the drop is significant.

Dog friendly activities Perth Hills: Settlers Common

Armadale Settlers’ Common

This network of trails ranges from 1 to 10 kilometres through shady jarrah forest. The Charcoal Hill lookout is worth the climb for the views alone. All trails require leashed dogs, but the variety means you can tailor your walk to your pup’s energy level.

Dog Friendly Cafés, Wineries and Pubs Worth Visiting

After all that walking, you’ll both be ready for refreshments. Here’s where to refuel together.

Six acres of gardens to explore with your leashed pup, plus proper water bowls and friendly staff. The cider is fantastic, and the outdoor seating area feels worlds away from the city. I’ve spent many lazy Sunday afternoons here.

Last Drop Elizabethan Pub (Bedfordale)

Known locally as “The Lizzie,” this pub has gained Instagram fame for its “Dogs of the Lizzie” posts. They genuinely love dogs here, often keeping treats behind the bar. The beer garden is spacious, and there’s usually a water bowl or three scattered about.

Things to do with dogs Perth Hills: Raeburn orchards

Raeburn Orchards (Roleystone)

While you can’t pick fruit with your dog, the orchard walks are photogenic and peaceful. Keep your pup leashed and enjoy wandering through the trees. It’s particularly beautiful during blossom season.

Address: 4 Raeburn Rd, Roleystone, WA, 6111

Off-Leash Parks for Burning Energy

Sometimes your dog just needs to run. Here are the best enclosed and off-leash areas in the Hills.

Elmore Way Enclosed Dog Park in High Wycombe is my top pick. Two separate fenced zones for small and large dogs, plus agility equipment for adventurous pups. There’s shade, seating for humans, and it’s well-maintained.

Hartfield Park Dog Exercise Area in Forrestfield offers unfenced bushland loops with creek access. It’s less structured than Elmore Way but brilliant for water-loving dogs. Just keep an eye on your pup around the creek, especially after rain.

Blackboy Hill Reserve in Greenmount is a historical memorial site that doubles as an off-leash area (except during events). The open space is great for ball games and zoomies.

Your Perfect Perth Hills Weekend Itinerary

Here’s how I’d structure a brilliant day out:

  • Morning (8am-10am): Start with a walk at Whistlepipe Gully or Jorgensen Park while it’s still cool. Pack water and take your time enjoying the scenery.
  • Late Morning (10:30am-12pm): Head to The Packing Shed or Naked Apple Cider House for brunch. Let your pup rest in the shade while you enjoy good coffee and food.
  • Afternoon (1pm-3pm): If your dog still has energy, stop at Elmore Way Enclosed Dog Park for off-leash playtime. Otherwise, visit a winery for relaxed afternoon drinks.
  • Late Afternoon: Head home before peak-hour traffic, or extend your adventure with an early dinner at the Last Drop.

This itinerary gives you variety without exhausting either of you. Adjust based on your dog’s age, fitness and the weather.

Seasonal Events and Markets

The Kalamunda Farmers Market runs Sunday mornings and welcomes leashed dogs. It’s brilliant for puppy socialisation and picking up local produce. The atmosphere is relaxed, and most stallholders are happy to see well-behaved pups.

Address: Nestobrae La, Kalamunda, WA, 6076

In May, the Bickley Valley Harvest Festival allows leashed dogs in outdoor tasting areas at participating wineries. It’s a lovely way to experience the Hills’ wine region with your furry friend.

Making the Most of Your Hills Adventure

The Perth Hills genuinely offers some of the best dog friendly activities in Perth. The combination of cooler temperatures, varied terrain and welcoming venues makes it perfect for year-round adventures.

Remember to check trail conditions before you go, particularly after heavy rain. Some paths can become slippery or flooded.

Pack more water than you think you’ll need, bring poo bags, and always respect leash requirements. Other trail users and wildlife will thank you.

Most importantly, take your time and enjoy the experience. These aren’t just things to do with dogs in Perth Hills; they’re opportunities to create memories, tire out your pup, and discover why so many of us love this region.
